JOURNEY is the best game I have played this year, it costs £9.99, lasts about 2 hours on your first play through but worth every penny!

Not knowing much about this game I made the purchase purely based on the opinion at GRcade and the fact it was made by ThatGameCompany, makers of Flower (another fantastic game).

The controls are really simple to use, 2 buttons and the left analogue stick or the motion sixaxis to move direction.  The whole story is basically your journey to a mountain you can see in the background throughout the game, on your journey you will come across small puzzles and areas you have to navigate.  You can’t die but you can collect Glyphs that will make your scarf longer, this allows you to become airborne once charged by touching cloth (snigger) which appears throughout the levels.  The longer your scarf the longer your flight!

Like flower there are a few enemies in the later levels which will shorten your scarf length much like the electricity took away your petals in flower, the game does have many similarities while at the same time being completely different.

The best thing about JOURNEY apart from the stunning graphics which are beautiful by the way! (Did I not mention?), is how random players will enter your game while you are playing.  At first I wondered what the hell was going on but once I worked out it was another human player I started following them and basically messing around.  You cannot talk to these players via text or speak but your character can let out a musical note sounding not too different to how the clangers communicated.   Sometimes I feel I can talk to the other person using this method of noises and they seem to understand me.

It would have been nice to play with members on your friends list but the only way seems to be a random person at a random moment and you can chose to follow them or wait around for someone else!  Other players can come and go as you play, you could meet one person or 10 different players but you may never know it’s a new player until the end when you will see a list of the players you met along your journey after the credits.

After completing the game there are extra things you can do, you can play to find all the hidden walls and glyphs which will unlock a white robe, this allows your character to fly around with ease and your scarf will recharge itself without the use of the cloth creatures.

Some favorite moments of this game is using the sand like snowboarding down a mountain, traveling through the entire game with another person and replaying the game showing someone else where all the hidden glyphs are.  The noises they make once we find a new area sounds like gratitude and makes you feel rewarded for helping them.  I have played through the game 6 times now and I am waiting a week before I play again just so I can pick up my final Trophy.

All in all one of the most beautiful games I have ever played, so simple and easy to play I can’t believe this is a DL game.
